Where Were You in 1957 - Layout by Barbara Thompson Brocaw

Where Were You in 1957

The most explosive year of the baby boom with 4,332,000 births according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It is still the largest annual birthrate in the history of the world.  Dwight Eisenhower was President.  The space race was officially launched when Sputnik was placed in orbit in the USSR.

An average family income was about $4500 and the average weekly allowance ranged from $5 for a 13 year old to $15 for an 18 year old!

As a teen you can get in to the movies for fifty cents and buy a box of pop corn for 15 cents.  It cost your parents 75 cents to get in and young ones could buy in for a quarter!  Chevrolet lists the brand new Corvettes for a mere $3400.

Fads that year were hula hoops, Frisbees, silly putty,  saddle shoes and rolled up socks, duck tails, poodle cuts, apricot hair & sack dresses, car coats, can-cans, button down shirts ......

The Beat Generation became beatniks after the the Russians launched Sputnik and these are just a few of the songs that dominated the billboard top 100 music scene in 1957!

Hit Tunes from 1957

Play M3U

All Shook Up - Elvis Presley

April Love - Pat Boone

Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley

Love Letters in the Sand - Pat Boone

Singing the Blues - Guy Mitchell
Tammy - Debbie Reynolds
Teddy Bear - Elvis Presley
That'll be the Day - Buddy Holly
Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers
You Send Me - Sam Cooke

The Music will Open in your Default Music Player

Start your favorite music to set the mood, dust off that keyboard and take a minute to tell us....   "Where were you and what were you doing in 1957?"

Inquiring minds need to know!

From January into April of 57 I worked at the sawmill in Coos Bay, Oregon. When business slowed down I took a job on a ranch at Agnes, Oregon. Agness is on the Rogue River. In 57, to get to Agnes it was a 37 mile trip on a gravel road from the nearest highway, OR, about 30 miles up the river by boat from Gold Beach, Oregon, At Agnes we raised chickens and prepared chicken dinners to feed to tourists who came up the river on one of the mail boats. It was an interesting Summer. When I left there in the Fall I moved to Portland, Oregon.
