Grandma's Attic - Layout by Barbara Thompson Brocaw

Grandma's Attic

Upstairs in Grandma's attic Almost hidden from my sight Lies a dust covered antique trunk Caught in a shaft of light Its hinges made of leather Are dried and cracked and brown Its iron latch is rusted And creaks as I push down Kneeling in the attic's dust As though in head bent prayer I hold my breath and lift the lid With tender loving care The history of my Grandma's life Lies folded up inside Each treasured little article Placed here with love and pride A lace and satin wedding gown Now faded into beige A christening gown with little cap A blanket worn with age A photo of a smiling girl I recognize as Mom A paper crinkly dried-up rose She took to her first prom Grandma's memories so lovingly saved Someday for me to see And though she's gone I still can feel The love she had for me.
